Las Vegas City Guide

While attending ThinkLab '10 in the City of Lights, take in some of the many attractions.

Walking the Las Vegas Strip provides plenty of people-watching opportunities. Along the way, stop outside of the Bellagio to watch the fountain display or outside of Treasure Island to watch the pirate show. Inside the Bellagio, the conservatory hosts a changing exhibit of flowers (recommended by ADVANCE Facebook fan Matthew Wilkie). MGM's signature lions are on display at the MGM Grand casino (recommended by ADVANCE Facebook fan Natalie Sophia-Marie Kozlowski), and you'll find strolling performers along the Venetian's Grand Canal.

CLMA's ThinkLab '10 will keep you busy with exploring lab management trends, experiencing new technology in the exhibit hall, networking and learning the latest and greatest ideas, methods and technologies in sessions, but surely you'll be looking to find some time in the evenings to experience some of the glitz and glitter of the City of Lights. There's certainly no shortage of attractions, so we've put together this guide to help point you in the right direction.

Dining

  • Nine Fine Irishmen, New York New York Casino. As expected from its name, the restaurant serves stouts, ales and lagers. The food side of the menu offers traditional Irish fare: Colcannon soup, corned beef, bangers and mash and Irish stew. Try the sticky toffee cheesecake for dessert.
  • Craftsteak, MGM Grand. Celebrity chef Tom Colicchio brought his world-renowned steakhouse to the MGM Grand. The à la carte menu offers corn-fed, grass-fed and Kobe beef. Seasonal ingredients come from family farms and artisan producers. Dress is business casual.
  • Aureole, Mandalay Bay. If you come here only to watch the Wine Angels fly up the four-story wine tower, you'll be pleasantly surprised by the excellent food and wine at Aureole. The mesmerizing wine tower holds 9,865 bottles, all perfectly climate-controlled. Chef Charlie Palmer is in charge of the menu, which boasts progressive American cuisine.
  • Garden Court Buffet, Main Street Hotel and Casino. Buffets are everywhere in Vegas. The Garden Court in Downtown Vegas offers one of the better bargains. Instead of a long cafeteria-style line, the buffet features stations with a rotating list of ethnic cuisine. Once a week, the buffet becomes a seafood lover's bonanza with all-you-can-eat lobster, shrimp and more.

Attractions

  • Hoover Dam. If you're up for a bit of a road trip, Hoover Dam sits 30 miles southeast of the city. Check with your concierge to see if any organized bus tours are available. Otherwise, you'll need a car to get to the dam where you can tour the power plant or the dam itself. Hoover is an important part of Las Vegas' history; without the dam, the city's famous neon lights would be dark.
