evacuated collection tubes have been available since i started doing phlebotomy in the early 1970's. i've always liked them and regarded them as a tremendous advance in phlebotomy. better for infection control, speed, efficiency and reduction of pre-analytical errors and probably have other advantages. they've only gotten better with the introduction of clotting tubes, easy-uncap and recap closures, liquid anticoagulants, Microtainer-type devices, sharper and self-covering needles, winged collection sets, etc.

In my day we cleaned, resharpened and sterilized our 20 gage blood collection needles. There were no disposables. I was also involved with helping BD to develop the vacutainer system. After using the vacutainer tube the first time we would wash the tubes and rubber stopper, dry them and re-stopper the tube. We then used a vacuum pump to take the air out of the tube so it could be used again. If it was a lav top we would measure the anticoagulant and use it again. You could do this about three times before the rubber stopper had to be discarded. When it became more economical this practice was discontinued. "1950's Those were the day's.
