Speak Out: Modalities

What area of the lab do you work in? Why do you love it?

Print ArticleEmail Article

We love hearing stories about how our readers broke into the laboratory profession. Some had clear plans, took the prescribed classes and never looked back. Others fell into the lab as a career, and found their calling. One of the best parts of our jobs here at ADVANCE is helping those new to the profession to find their footing.

So we're asking you, our experienced laboratory leaders, to share your stories. When did your career "click" for you? What modality have you fallen in love with? Why do you think microbiology, blood banking, pathology or your area of the laboratory makes for a rewarding, enjoyable career?

Please take a moment to share your story, your passion and your advice for the newest members of your profession by emailing us at khatt@advanceweb.com, or by commenting below.

When I was a kid I collected cirgar tubes and ran tests on my urine, much to my mothers dismay over the smell. I loved the study of laboratroy medicine, though I would be a physician, but decided not after seeing how many middle of the night callbacks occured. Then I was Tech at a small hospital on call for for seven providers, driving to another, thinking where did I go wrong? I went to work for POLs and never looked back. I have been working now for 40 years and I love every day. I highly recomend the POL because of the direct involvement in our patients health care needs. The other professional staff make you feel like you are part of a team in their care. My knowledge and experience are valued and appreciated. This is what health care is about.

I was 51 yr old when my first husband of 34 yr, my high school sweetheart, died. I am a professional seamstress but I could no longer support myself in that industry. A friend offered to put me through school and so I decided to go to college to become a lab tech.I absolutely love the work and I am currently a traveling tech and especially love being a generalist and working all the areas of the lab.
