Dr. Friedberg listed the following attributes of good leaders:

Recognizing Leaders
The College presented the annual awards at a special ceremony during the meeting.

Thomas M. Sodeman, MD, FCAP, the CAP immediate past president, was named the 2008 Pathologist of the Year at the meeting, for his tireless contributions to the CAP over the years. "It is a tremendous honor to be recognized by CAP with the Pathologist of the Year Award," Dr. Sodeman said. "Through my service as a CAP Board member, president-elect, and president, I have had the privilege to represent the College and the profession."

Five recipients were awarded the 2008 CAP Foundation Humanitarian Grant Awards. Karlene Opal Hewan-Lowe, MD, FCAP, Greenville, NC, received a grant to provide diabetic screening and testing to diabetic residents of eastern North Carolina. Heng Hong, MD, PhD, FCAP, Greenville, NC, received a grant to provide universal HIV screening tests for pregnant women in a remote area in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China. Robert B. Lorsbach, MD, PhD, FCAP, Little Rock, AR, received a grant to improve laboratory services in Haiti. Jan Anthony Nowak, MD, PhD, FCAP, Evanston, IL, received a grant to expand the diabetes screening program in one of the most impoverished areas of the United States. Drucilla J. Roberts, MD, FCAP, Boston, received a grant to recruit a pathologist for the Adwa Clinic in northern Ethiopia.

Richard W. Brown, MD, FCAP, Houston; Edward P. Fody, MD, FCAP, Holland, MI; Bruce Allen Jones, MD, FCAP, Detroit, MI; Frederick L. Kiechle, MD, PhD, FCAP, Hollywood, FL; Anthony A. Killeen, MD, PhD, FCAP, Minneapolis; George G. Klee, MD, PhD, FCAP, Rochester, MN; Robert W. Novak, MD, FCAP, Akron, OH; Richard M. Nunnally, MD, FCAP, Baton Rouge, LA; James M. Small, MD, PhD, FCAP, Denver; John Carson Hay Steele Jr., MD, PhD, FCAP, Augusta, GA; and Raymond R. Tubbs, DO, FCAP, Cleveland, were honored with Lifetime Achievement Awards.

James D. MacLowry, MD, FCAP, Portland, OR, received the CAP Laboratory Improvement Program Service Award. Ronald B. Lepoff, MD, FCAP, Aurora, CO, received the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program Service Award. Melinda Moore Lewis, MD, FCAP, Atlanta, received the CAP Outstanding Communicator Award. George F. Kwass, MD, FCAP, Haverhill, MA, received the CAP Public Service Award. Kim A. Collins, MD, FCAP, Charleston, SC, received the CAP Distinguished Patient Care Award. Francis E. Sharkey, MD, FCAP, San Antonio, received the CAP Outstanding Service Award. James P. AuBuchon, MD, FCAP, Seattle, received the CAP Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Collins was also awarded the CAP Foundation Lansky Award.

CAP awarded five San Diego-area high school students the College's 2008 "Path to a Future in Medicine" award: 

  • Ilya Gaidarov from Torrey Pines High--Project Title: "High Content Analysis-Based Assay for Cholesterol Accumulation in Macrophages;"
  • Eulogio Gallo from Central Union High School--Project Title: "Temporomandibular Disorder and Malocclusion Relationships;"
  • Marie Nguyen from Mt. Miguel High--Project Title: "Effect of Nutrient Additives on Ethanol Production by Saccharomyces Cerevisiae;"
  • Tia Ray from Central Union High School--Project Title: "Temporomandibular Disorder and Malocclusion Relationships;" and
  • Edward Schwer from Holtville High--Project Title: "Can You Repeat That? Noise Induced Hearing Loss."

Additionally, William F. Hickey, MD, FCAP, Lebanon, NH, was elected to his first full term as a member of the CAP Board of Governors. Louis Dixon Wright, Jr., MD, FCAP, Charleston, SC; James Arthur Robb, MD, FCAP, Boca Raton, FL; and Jay F. Schamberg, MD, FCAP, of Milwaukee, WI, were re-elected as governors.
